Quality and service since 1947
In March of 1947, San Diego Fence Company was founded by John B. Clark JR, after his honorable discharge from the Marines following World War II. Learning the business from the ground up, Mr. Clark started as a helper on a three-man chain link fence crew. The first San Diego Fence Company office was a 20’ by 20’ garage unit on Midway Drive with a metal filing cabinet for a desk, a chair and his wife Katy answering the phone. In 1952 the company was incorporated, and in 1969 a 5 ½ acre site in Kearny Mesa was purchased for its new location.
In 1968, Tony Rosa began with the company, and worked his way up to president, leading the company through a time of unprecedented growth over the following 40 years, and becoming a leader in the fence industry.
On October 2, 1972, one of the darkest hours of San Diego Fence Company history occurred when a four alarm fire broke out in the work yard. Through the amazing support and generosity of friends, suppliers, and even competitors, 7 crews were running again four days later. As Mr. Clark said at the time, “never can one be so humbled as when friends come to the rescue. We will never forget how our suppliers and competitors came to our aid with trucks and materials to keep us going.”
San Diego Fence Company has been at the forefront and leadership of innovation in the construction industry. The company pioneered the use of one man crews, which proved to be a more efficient way of building fences. San Diego Fence Company was also one of the first employers in California to institute a workplace drug testing program and employee assistance program, moderating education seminars at fence industry trade shows and construction industry functions. As a result of these and many other activities, John B. Clark, Jr. was inducted into the Building Industry Association Hall of Fame in 1987.
Don Kidder began at San Diego Fence Company in 1985, and took over the reigns as president of the company in 2008. His 25+ years of experience have allowed San Diego Fence Company to continue to provide the highest level of quality in fence installations in San Diego. Don is currently serving on the Board of Directors of the American Fence Association.
Called by World Fence News “one of the oldest and most storied fence contracting firms in the country”, well over 100,000 fence installations have been performed since the first truck rolled out of the yard in 1947.
